  • Overview

Jennifer Waight, specialist clinical negeligence lawyer based at Thomson Snell & Passmore’s Tunbridge Wells and Dartford (Thames Gateway) offices, has secured £15,000 for a woman who developed necrosis of the breast following a mastopexy surgery.

The claimant in this clinical negligence claim was a 46 year old woman who underwent mastopexy surgery (breast lift) to both breasts at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. Within hours after the surgery the claimant noticed that her left breast was more swollen than the right and felt hard to touch.

It was noted by the doctors that there was an indication that the claimant was developing a small haematoma (blood clot) in her left breast. The day after the surgery it was noted that the left breast was even more swollen. Despite this she was discharged home that day.

The condition of the claimant’s left breast continued to deteriorate. She attended her GP and the A&E department of her local hospital who advised her to return to St Thomas’ Hospital. She was re-admitted 8 days after her original surgery.

At the time she attended hospital the vertical wound on the left breast had broken open and pus was discharging from the wound. She had also developed necrosis (death of tissue due to lack of blood supply), affecting her breast and nipple, caused by the haematoma.

Jennifer Waight, acting for the claimant, successfully argued that the defendants had been negligent in failing to identify and/or drain the haematoma at an earlier stage.
