ArticleUpdates Porton Down Ronald Maddison death 1953 Sarin nerve agent poisoning - The MoD in February this year dropped their High Court Judicial Review challenge and the inquest verdict by the Wiltshire jury after 50+ days of evidence stands. This is a remarkable result as it means the government accepts the jury’s verdict that it criminally killed a British RAF serviceman. The MoD and MI6 Secret Intelligence Services settled further claims brought by servicemen in respect of LSD tests carried out on them without their knowledge or consent. Soon to go forward are about 400 claims by Porton Down veterans for injuries caused by experiments at Porton Down from the 1940s - 1980s involving various chemical warfare toxic substances including Sarin, mustard gas, CR and other mind altering drugs such as glycollates. Leading toxicologist Professor Jim Bridges is collating the cases. The claims will be bought by TS&P and Leigh Day & Co who are working on this joint project. Hair dyes The EU has recently banned a substantial number of hair dye ingredients but PPD remains in hair dyes and there will be further adverse reactions. Alan Care said “If L’Oreal and other hair dye manufacturers would only place a warning on our TV screens given their relentless TV advertising so as to warn consumers to carry out a patch test before use I am sure some injuries could be avoided”. It is understood that sadly only about 10% of consumers actually carry out a patch test before each and every use as is required in order to “minimise risk”. Failure by consumers to carry out a patch test will inevitably result in hair dye manufacturers disclaiming liability when things go wrong and consumers end up in hospital.
