Leading Court of Protection expert Martin Terrell joins firm

Thomson Snell & Passmore has continued the expansion of its Private Client Group by welcoming Martin Terrell, Partner to the firm.

Martin has considerable expertise in Court of Protection and specialises in the fields of probate and elderly client work. Having read law at Durham University and qualified in 1991, Martin is a well known author on the Court of Protection and mental capacity.

Martin joins the Private Client team from an East Sussex firm and was previously working for a specialist personal injury practice in London.

He has lectured and written extensively on Court of Protection and elderly client matters, especially for Elderly Client Adviser; he is the author of A Practitioner's Guide to the Court of Protection (Tottel) and a joint editor and contributor to the Law Society's Elderly Client Handbook.

Martin is also joint vice chairman of Solicitors for the Elderly and a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners. He has also acted as a panel receiver (deputy) for the Court of Protection and was a member of the former Public Guardianship Office Professional Receiver's Forum.

Jeremy Passmore, Head of Private Client, commented: "We are very pleased to welcome Martin to the team, which now comprises some 25 legal advisers.  With the increasing number of people reaching retirement age, every adult should consider the practical implications of becoming physically or mentally incapable of managing their own affairs, whether because of accident, ill-health or old age.  Our usual advice would be to create a Lasting  Power of Attorney,  but without this the Court of Protection will appoint a Deputy on their behalf. Martin has a strong reputation in this field dealing with the full range of Court of Protection services.  At Thomson Snell & Passmore we have one of the largest teams in the south east of lawyers specialising in this area of practice. Martin joining us emphasises and strengthens the firm’s commitment to this vitally important area of work.  I wish him every success."

Martin added "Thomson Snell & Passmore is one of the few firms which can demonstrate specialist experience in matters involving the Court of Protection and related work.  I am delighted to be joining such a reputable practice."
