The specialist clinical negligence team at Thomson Snell & Passmore have launched an investigation on behalf of patients who have suffered injuries following treatment by the consultant surgeon, Dr David Bruce Jackson. Dr Jackson is facing in the region of 75 allegations of inappropriate and potentially negligent treatment involving a total of 16 patients in four Kent hospitals.
The Telegraph reported in June this year that along with the incidents currently being investigated by the clinical negligence team at Thomson Snell & Passmore, Dr Jackson has left a woman with an asymmetric belly button after liposuction, he removed the wrong lump of breast tissue during a patient's lumpectomy and that he has punctured a woman's abdomen during a hernia repair. There have been reports of botched mastectomy surgery leaving cancer patients with uneven breasts and nipples and a case currently being investigated by the team at Thomson Snell and Passmore involves a failure to diagnose colon cancer.
These incidents of potential medical negligence occurred across four hospitals in Kent between 1989 and 2007. The hospitals currently understood to be involved in these cases are the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital in East Grinstead, the Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, The Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mother Hospital in Margate and the BMI Chaucer Hospital also in Canterbury meaning that both NHS and private hospitals have been affected.
It is understood that Dr David Jackson appealed to have his name voluntarily erased from the medical register claiming that he was unwell, in an attempt to escape a full hearing into his conduct. At this stage it we understand that the General Medical Council (GMC) in London are planning on carrying out a full investigation into all the allegations of misconduct but the hearing date is yet to be set. Due to the large number of allegations this hearing is likely to run for several weeks.
The specialist clinical negligence team at Thomson Snell & Passmore led by Fiona Mills and Patricia Fearnley are assisting with initial GMC complaints and will be attending the GMC hearing in due course. A further update on the results of the GMC findings will follow in due course.
