  • Overview

We are pleased to announce that Martin Terrell, a Partner in the Court of Protection Team, has been reappointed by the national Office of the Public Guardian to its new panel of deputies.

In further recognition of his expertise, Martin has also been shortlisted for Vulnerable Client Adviser of the Year at the STEP Private Client Awards. Solicitor in his team,Victoria Ward, was also shortlisted for the STEP Young Practitioner of the Year.  STEP is the worldwide professional association for those advising families across generations. The awards celebrate excellence in the sector.

Over the last decade Martin’s work has increasingly focused on the needs of elderly and vulnerable clients.  He acts as deputy for a wide range of individuals; from severely brain damaged adults and children to older clients living at home or in long term care.  As well as being appointed frequently to act as a panel deputy, he also acts for parties in Court of Protection proceedings in relation to contentious and complex statutory will applications, disputes over powers of attorney and the appointment of deputies.

The Office of the Public Guardian protects people in England and Wales who may not have the mental capacity to make certain decisions for themselves, especially with regard to their property and financial affairs.  The Office of Public Guardian panel consists of 67 solicitors in England and Wales who have been selected to represent people who lack capacity to manage their own affairs.  Panel deputies are appointed following an extensive tendering process to select solicitors with the legal and personal skills to deal with this demanding area of practice.

Karl Wingfield, Private Client Director, said “Martin is one of the most experienced and well regarded practitioners in this area. His reappointment as a panel deputy  is testament not only to his expertise but to that of the whole team and its proficiency in handling the most challenging deputyship cases.  His and Victoria’s shortlisting for a STEP Private Client Award highlights the  strong reputation that Martin and his team have developed in this area”.
