Charities
Our services for charities have always been an important area of our work.
Our team helps charities and other not for profit organisations, through all stages from establishment of the charity, its operation, changes to its constitution and perhaps ultimately winding up.
The team comprises lawyers with different specialist legal skills from across the firm. Our work in this area is well recognised in the UKs independent guides to the legal profession, Chambers UK and The Legal 500.
We work with a wide range of charity clients from large national organisations through to smaller local concerns.
Our services include:
- creating a charity - advice on charitable objects and activities, an appropriate constitution and registration with the Charity Commission
- constitutional issues - helping established charities to amend constitutions, establishing and re-organising subsidiary structures
- mergers and winding-up - advice on the legal and practical aspects of takeovers, mergers, joint working arrangements, and winding-up
- trading and fundraising - advice on issues arising out of trading and subsidiary trading structures, the exploitation of rights and assets, and issues for fundraising activities
- charity property - particular rules apply to acquiring and disposing of land belonging to charities
- governance issues - advice on trustees' liabilities, responsibilities and good practice and regulatory issues
- legacies to charities - advice on the issues arising out of legacies, and the administration of estates, to maximise the benefit to the charity.
