Meningitis

It is well known that meningitis is a virulent condition that will often prove fatal or cause long term neurological damage unless treated promptly.

As a result, time is of the essence and the claimant often has the burden of proving that a referral diagnosis should have been made sooner. Sometimes, only one or two hours can make the difference to whether a case succeeds.

We have dealt with the following errors:

  • delay by a general practitioner in attending patient and referring him to hospital
  • hospital failure to appropriately record patient's symptoms leading to delay in diagnosis
  • hospital discharging patient following warning from its own microbiologist that the patient may have spinal meningitis
  • catastrophic brain injury caused by prescription error in treatment of neonatal meningitis
  • inadequate antibiotic treatment following diagnosis.
