  • Overview

Jennifer Waight, specialist clinical negligence lawyer based at Thomson Snell & Passmore’s Tunbridge Wells and Dartford (Thames Gateway) offices, has secured £25,000 for a woman who suffered pain and infection in her right hip after an eight month delay in undertaking a right hip replacement revision surgery.

The claimant in this medical negligence claim was a 69 year old woman from Peacehaven, East Sussex who had undergone an uncemented right hip replacement and numerous required revisions as an NHS patient at the Horder Centre, Crowborough.

In January 2011, the claimant underwent revision surgery due to ceramic liner failure.

Unfortunately, 3-4 weeks later the claimant developed an infection in the right hip which required debridement (wash out of the wound). She was treated conservatively with antibiotics. Over the coming months the claimant suffered chronic diarrhoea as a result of the antibiotics and was bedbound. She had numerous readmissions to hospital for wash outs of the wound under general anaesthetic. She also suffered a dislocated hip.

She finally underwent the first of a two stage hip revision in November 2011 under the care of a different trust.

Jennifer Waight acted for the claimant and successfully claimed that the Horder Centre had been negligent in the orthopaedic care provided. The claimant should have been referred for the first of a two stage hip revision in March 2011 and she suffered an eight month delay during which time she suffered chronic diarrhoea and unnecessary wash outs and debridements as well as a dislocated hip.

She was able to obtain an out-of-court settlement of £25,000 to compensate the claimant for her pain and suffering and to pay for any future treatment needs she may have.

Jennifer Waight specialises in orthopaedic cases. If you would like to ask Jennifer a question about a potential case, or if you have a general query about clinical negligence, contact her on 01892 701374 in confidence.
