What is a civil partnership?
A civil partnership is a legal relationship which is registered by two people who are not related. It is different to a cohabitating partnership which has no legal framework and no financial provision if the relationship comes to and end.
Since 2005, same sex couples have been able to enter into registered civil partnerships, and since 2014, same sex couples have also been able to enter into marriage. Couples of the opposite sex have been permitted to enter into a civil partnership since 31 December, 2019.
Whilst same sex couples can now legally marry in England and Wales, a civil partnership is considered an alternative to the traditional or religious aspects of marriage. A registered civil partnership confers similar rights, obligations and duties as those conferred upon married couples but outside of the institution of marriage.
