Government guidance for the construction industry highlights the need for employers to assess and manage the risks by carrying out a COVID-19 risk assessment. On the basis of this risk assessment, sensible measures should be put in place to control the risks identified.
Whilst employers should aim to reduce attendance at site by allowing employees to work from home, it is simply not possible for many construction workers to do so. Those who remain on site should ensure that social distancing is maintained as far as possible.
Alongside the practical steps described above, consider changing the layout and organisation of the site to create distinct groups so each person only works with a few others.
Arrival and departure times should be staggered and movement around the site limited or reduced with one-way systems. Consider how delivery of goods could be altered to reduce risk so that unnecessary contact is reduced where possible.
