Guy Hollamby, Partner and Head of Residential Conveyancing at Thomson Snell & Passmore talks about his career and achievements leading one of  the largest and most experienced residential property teams in the South East.

Established in 1570! Can it be possible? In the case of Thomson Snell & Passmore it is. When I first joined the firm in 1983, the first document I was given to read was the firm’s history: ‘The First Four Hundred Years’.

In those pre-internet days this was not a fact that I had been aware of prior to my interview. Although born in East Africa, I had come from a school in Sevenoaks that traced its own history back to very small beginnings in 1432. There was a pleasing symmetry to be joining a firm like Thomson Snell & Passmore with similar small and historic beginnings that had subsequently grown into an institution of which one could be really proud.

Dare I say it, but I have been with the firm for 31 years. When I first joined we were a multi-office firm based in Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Cranbrook and Ashford, and latterly at Maidstone and Sevenoaks.

Within a year of joining I had opened our Sevenoaks office. For me it was a dream come true to grow the practice in a new area where I had a lot of contacts, particularly from my local knowledge, family connections and from playing sport. As Chairman of Sevenoaks Vine Cricket Club for 20 years I added another historical connection to my CV helping the Club celebrate its 250th anniversary in 1984 – the same year as opening the office.

Why these ramblings, you ask? Well, if you are choosing a professional to act for you in buying a house, isn’t it reassuring to know that your solicitors have personal knowledge of the local and surrounding areas in which you are going to live and that they are part of a firm with a lasting and stable reputation which you can trust?

Whilst many of us remember with fondness our days working in smaller branch offices, our team are now all based in our Tunbridge Wells office and, of course, there are great benefits to this. Not only can we share experiences, solutions and our widespread knowledge of the area, but we also have immediate support on-hand to cover holidays and illnesses.

In a year when the volume of work has increased significantly our team of nine qualified solicitors ensure that the clients of Thomson Snell & Passmore are well looked after.
