A trust combining tax saving with control

Stuart’s client inherited his wife’s share of some farmland, which had huge developmental potential. In the circumstances, Stuart advised that a deed of variation would be appropriate to avoid the inheritance forming part of his client’s taxable estate.

Stuart assisted in establishing a trust for the client’s children, enabling the client to continue to control and manage the land.

Stuart worked closely with the Commercial Property team at Thomson Snell & Passmore, which was involved in negotiating and completing a development deal for the client. This led to extensive funds coming into the trust. The powers in the trust were then utilised by Stuart to pay out the money in stages to the children.

Stuart helped his client achieve an inheritance tax saving in excess of £1 million, enabling the client’s children and their families to benefit significantly.
